Travels
Today started at 3 am, eastern. By 4:50, Rox and I were at the airport, where we had absolutely no problem getting checked in for our flight. The TSA guys in security were GREAT, and offered Rox a job with security. She said that working TSA security sounds like a lot more fun than being thrown in a box and pushed from place to place... ( Can you find the puppy in this picture? )I spent some time in downtown Madison today, and it is a very nice town. Feels a lot like Carrboro, NC. I passed out like the dead this afternoon in the hotel room. Right now Rox and I are at a very nice LaQuinta (With an indoor pool! I didn't think to bring a swimsuit!) And for those that care, I have a white Pontiac G6 as the current rental :) | | Friday, September 5th, 2008 | | 11:55 am |
Destination Known!
I am definitely going to Madison, Wisconsin for 2-3 months. I will leave on Wednesday, September 10. Roxie and I will be flying, and Rox is NOT EXCITED about her first flight. But she will have a SNAZZY doggie carrier, pictures of which will be posted. ... but she says that no matter how many (flourescant) pink polka dots I spray paint onto the big brown box, she doesn't want to go inside. | | Thursday, August 21st, 2008 | | 11:06 am |

On the Road Again!
Life is grand in Cary NC - but in case you didn't notice, there were some floods in the midwest this year. So in 3 weeks, I'm going to be heading out again to work on the recovery efforts for those floods. Right now, I'm 90% sure that I'm going to Madison, Wisconsin. The second runner up is Minnesota, and there is nochanceatall that I will be going to Florida to work Fay. At least, not in this round of travel. Other little trips, before the Big One, are a weekend at Myrtle Beach, and I'll be heading to New Orleans for the Saints Season Opener at the Dome. Now - after two winters in Louisiana, where in the world are my winter clothes? | | Thursday, July 24th, 2008 | | 1:24 pm |

Where you at?
Kittician adventure, The last days: Things went crazy, I checked into a hotel room, and everyone lived happily ever after. Andy has since moved back to NC for good. Louisiana Adventure: I'm not there anymore. As of March 14, I am done with the Katrina Rita recovery operations for the time being. I returned to North Carolina April 1, with all animals in tow (literally). Mid-may I got an apartment in Cary, NC, and I am working for the same company as an engineer in their RTP office. All is well... .. except in the midwest, where all of my FEMA friends are gathering for another round of frustration, exhaustion, and adventure. I'm not ready to go back to 12-hour days 6 days a week yet. So for now, I'm offering emotional support, possible dog-sitting, and to meet them in Chicago for good times. But who knows what might come next. | | Thursday, February 14th, 2008 | | 9:06 am |

King Cake
In the time leading up to Mardi Gras, you can't avoid King Cake. But, all king cakes are very much not alike. My grandmother got a traditional one for our family at Christmas. It didn't ship well, but it was a "traditional" king cake - a ring of pastry-like cake with cinnamon, and icing on top. Then we had one at work from a local bakery that was a ring of the pastry-like cake, stuffed with strawberry filling and cream cheese. There have been a few variations at work of the cakes sold by Walmart, which aren't bad, but are generally really sweet. Last weekend I bought a rasberry cream cheese filled king cake at Whole Foods and took it to New Orleans for Barkus (king cakes and carnival parades go together). It was a little too gooey. But today at work, I think I have found my favorite of all the king cakes that I have tried. A coworker brought it as a representation of what the bakery based in her home town of Opelousas makes (they have a store here in Baton Rouge) It is like a ring of three glazed doughnuts, braided together with lemon filling. Then there is the icing on top, and purple green and yellow drizzes. It is fantastic! And when I wonder why my diet isn't working, I'll just remind myself that next wednesday there won't be a King Cake to be found anywhere in this city. | | Wednesday, January 30th, 2008 | | 8:23 am |
Roxie the Dog, Warrior Princess
This weekend was the Mystic Krewe of Barkus Parade in the French Quarter. The theme was "Indiana Bones and Raiders of the Lost Bark" - pretty hard for dressing up puppies. Roxie decided to represent scene 1, with the jungle warriors. This was our easier idea - since Matt and I were both busy last week (and are both really bad about procrastinating, so last week was when we felt the costume should be prepared) It is hard to see all the detail in the pictures, but the costume had three major pieces: a leafy harness in the front, a grass skirt in the back, a bow hanging from one side, and some arrows in a cool container on the other. These three pieces were connected with a bamboo-looking strip across her back. Our resourcefulness was giving me flashback of my days in Odyssey of the Mind. It was definitely an adventure. Saturday night, I realised that I had left the registration materials (including our passes to the parade) in Baton Rouge, and pouted, afraid that we wouldn't be allwed to be in the parade (entry the day of the parade was $50, I pre-registered for $30) but in the end, they gave me a replacement packet with no hassle! We dressed Rox at the park, including the application of the face paint. Of course, as is becoming tradition, her costume fell apart several time during the parade, but Matt and I have become quite the costume surgical team, able to shout above the crowds "STAPLER!" and have it in my hands in seconds. I won't make it to as much of Carnival this season, but I will be in New Orleans for Mardi Gras day. I am taking suggestions for religious statements that CNN would actually televise, shout I put them on a giant sign and carry them around... Now. Pictures. Infamy!
When all is said and done, at least I will know that I was a part of Something Infamous. The media has actually been touching on my job a lot recently. If you believed them, then my job description would be "Ordering people to count pencils," an issue that comes up in at least two recent articles. Here and here. In the first article, they reference the internal review process. That is what I do. I have been a part of several different types of internal reviews. Both articles pertain to the Public Assistance Progam of FEMA, the program that I've been a part of while down here. My boss has found her own personal infamy, regarding the little fishies at the Aquarium of the Americas. If we ever need a good debate at the office, we bring up this issue. I was sitting next to Barb when she wrote that email. I have feelings on the issue, but none that I can post on a public blog :) But I can tell you that the fishies have been paid for after the second appeal. With that, I leave you with December 19's Doonsbury: ( Read more... ) | | Tuesday, November 27th, 2007 | | 8:54 pm |
Living in a hotel
I've been really bad about updating this, but I am back in Baton Rouge, doing the same as before at work. I'm living in a hotel, and so far that's working out great. ...except there isnt' much space set up to move in, you know? just a couple of drawers, and a tiny closet. So tonight, I finally got around to organizing things. I'm not completely finished, but am proud of my handiwork so far. So I present to you my shelving system! I'm in redondo bach now... Went to Magic Mountain yesterday and had lots of fun. It was 115 degrees, felt kinda like 85 or so. LOADS of fun... Nobody was there (they seemed to think it was hot or something) so there were no lines or anything... Anyways, back to NOLA tomorrow. For now, all is well. | | Friday, August 17th, 2007 | | 2:18 pm |
Dean and Done
We've moved to a new office here in FEMA-land, which is a very old office - the original Katrina/Rita hub. Now it is a huge vacant building, and is all set up for response operations. Hundreds of tables sit, empty, with phones set up, ready for people to populate the area and get to work should something rainy and windy head this way. It is the Louisiana Hub for response, if not for more of the Gulf Coast. I just walked through the sea of empty desks, and the few people that live there all the time were buzzing enough to make me comfortable. Meanwhile, unless Dean curves around, heads this way and makes things interesting (which I am IN NO WAY hoping for), I have decided that next Thursday will be my last day in FEMA-land for a little while. I will still make my trip to Kentucky and California, then probably return to New Orleans for a little while so that I can continue to ride my horse, and study for the Professional Engineering (PE) exam in October. After the Carolina Panthers play the Saints, I'll drive up to NC, and hang out there until after the PE exam. Once that is behind me, I'll try to return to FEMA land in Lousiana. Hopefully, I will return in a different role. Today a larger complication of this plan has arisen... some of my friends in New Orleans had planned for my place in Baton Rouge to be their evacuation destination, so now they are having to come up with new plans. I hate that I won't get to hold an evacuation party! | | Thursday, August 9th, 2007 | | 7:45 am |
Friends and Family Tour 2007
You don't even want to know how much I just spent on airfare :) At the end of August I am going to commence on a cross-country 11-day whirlwind adventure. Here are the details: Friday, August 24, fly from Baton Rouge to Lexington, Kentucky, where my parents will pick me up from the airport at 2:15 in the afternoon. Mom and I will then drag dad to the horse park, or somewhere similarly horsey, because we'll be in LEXINGTON KENTUCKY. Saturday - perhaps we'll go to the horse park then instead, with more time available. Then my cousin Brian is getting married. Sunday - ride to NC with my parents Monday - drive to Raleigh to visit with Elena, then go to the dentist, then visit with some Sorority Sisters - perhaps go see little_jen's apartment somewhere in there? Must fit her in. Tuesday - Drive back to Winston Wednesday - visit with my grandmother, have her take me to the airport in Charlotte. Fly to San Diego, California. Thursday/Friday hang out with my cousin and be a lazy beach bum. Friday - drive to Los Angeles, perhaps, for a bridal shower/bachelorette party. Saturday - Hang out with my friend Tim (who I have the Saints tickets with) in Los Angeles/Redondo Beach Sunday - Friend from high school's wedding Monday - direct flight back to New Orleans, with Tim. Tuesday - show up for work bright and cheery. So... if you want to see me, you know where I'll be! | | Sunday, July 8th, 2007 | | 9:22 pm |

Jackson Hole!
Mom and I have been having a fantastic trip. ( picture story: ) that ferry was really cool - they would tilt it a certain way, and the current would push against the pontoons, and it would be pushed across the water. Then they would turn the pontoons in a different direction to get back across. It held the first cars and stuff, too... Mr. Vice President is in town, and he evidently comes and fishes on the Snake River on occasion. Captain Morgan had a great story about one of his secret servicemen deciding to come down the river on his own (on his off-day) and popping his raft and gteting stranded. When he was rescued, he told the rescuers that he was a Secret Service agent, and that it was a matter of national security that they tell nobody what happened. 2 days later, the newspaper headline read "Boating Accident no 'Secret'" Air Force 2 is still sitting at the Jackson Hole Airport. Hopefully he doesn't decide to leave at the same time as us. | | Wednesday, June 20th, 2007 | | 10:22 am |
Rain and plans
Massive storm yesterday - it was gorgeous. Lots of flooding here in Baton Rouge, as much as Baton Rouge floods. It made for a scary drive home from the barn, and I tried to take pictures. But my camera didn't like the combination of headlights and water reflections and I needed both hands on the wheel, and my father will probably sleep better without seeing pictures of me driving in hazardous conditions anyways... Some people are losing track of all my travel plans. Not that I expect anybody to be able to keep up with me, here is the current plan: June29-July 1: Pensacola Beach Florida with coworkers. We are celebrating two of my coworkers birthdays at the Hilton beachfront in Pensacola - one of the great perks of having friends with lots of hotel points to use up! July 6-10 I'll be in Jackson Hole Wyoming with my mother :) early august - sneak trip to NC if my cousin Carrie comes to town... August 25, lexington Kentucky for my cousin Brian's wedding August 26-31: ????? Not certain. Possibly in NC. Possibly helping Andrea move to vet school... who knows! August 31-Sept 3: possibly in Los Angeles for another wedding... So lots of traveling possibilities. The trip to Memphis didn't happen, but could be thrown in on some weekend in the future. | | Tuesday, June 19th, 2007 | | 8:42 am |
The Iraq Bill...
So where did your billion dollars go this weekend? I spent it! How's that for a title? "U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Care, Katrina Recovery, and Iraq Accountability Appropriations Act of 2007" |
